About Similkameen Baptist Church

In July 2016 Rick and Helen Wiebe, who were semi retired, moved to Keremeos and began attending one of the local churches.  Things weren’t going well and in May 2018, they like many others, left the church and were hard pressed to find a suitable fellowship to join.

There had been comments about starting another church.  Rick was told about Stan and Patty Sjodin who had recently moved to Cawston and were looking for a church home.  Rick and Helen went to visit them with the result that the following Sunday, June 3, 2018, nine people met in Sjodin’s living room.

On November 18, 2018 the church began holding services at the Seventh Day Adventist church building and met there until covid hit.  By the time the meeting restrictions were lifted there were too many people in attendance for the SDA building so the church moved into the Cawston Hall.  On June 4, 2023 they began meeting in the new hall at the Keremeos Rodeo grounds.

From the beginning, the emphasis of the ministry of this church has been to focus on the Bible, working their way in Sunday messages, through various books of the Bible, and not on topical studies.

Special activities have included:

  • Monthly fellowship meal
  • Preparing Christmas shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse.
  • Carols By Candlelight to which the community was invited.
  • Baptismal services in the Similkameen River at the Red Bridge.
  • Kid’s clubs
  • Some non typical activities for young people and adults such as a weekly whittling group, and shooting at the rifle range.

Rick Wiebe is the “accidental pastor” (though he does not believe in accidents – God is in control), of Similkameen Baptist Church.

He graduated from Canadian Bible College (Regina, SK) in 1970 and embarked on a 23 year career in gospel ministry serving the Lord in churches in Ontario, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. In the 90’s it seemed that the call to ministry was lifted, and he spent the next 20 plus years not pastoring.  Rick and Helen came to Keremeos in 2016, with absolutely no intention of founding or pastoring a church.  God had other ideas!

SBC was born in 2018, out of a God given perception of the need for a fellowship which would preach the Word of God, and thereby meet the spiritual needs of people who, for a variety of reasons were not being ministered to up to that point, and a prophetic utterance by a now deceased servant of the Lord, Ceci Bodden, who said, “I want you to be my pastor.”  Rick heard God’s voice in those words, and through them was recalled to pastoral ministry at the age of 72.

Rick’s call is to preach the Word of God. The Bible is inspired by God to enable people to know Him, therefore it is important for people to know what it says and how it relates to what they are facing right now. So Rick’s preaching involves going through Bible books, which will address the issues that people face, and call them to trust God in every circumstance.

Rick is an outdoorsman who enjoys the wilderness.  He needs “bush time” to appreciate the things God has made without human intervention. This involves hunting, fishing and gathering materials for the whittling and woodcarving courses that he has taught for many years.

Rick and Helen have two beautiful daughters, Heidi and Brenda, a granddaughter, Jordan and grandson, Nathan.

Bible

We believe the Old and New Testaments, inerrant as originally given, were verbally inspired by God and are a complete revelation of His will for the salvation of people. They constitute the divine and only rule of Christian faith and practice.

God

We believe there is one God, who is infinitely perfect, existing eternally in three persons:  Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Jesus

We believe Jesus Christ is true God and true man.  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.  He died upon the cross, the just for the unjust, as a substitutionary sacrifice, and all who believe in Him are justified on the ground of His shed blood.  He arose from the dead according to the Scriptures.  He is now at the right hand of the Majesty on high as our great High Priest.  He will come again to establish His kingdom of righteousness and peace.

Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Godhead, in the present age indwells all believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, baptizes them into the body of Christ, seals them unto the day of redemption, and that every believer is commanded of God to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Man’s Creation and Fall

We believe humankind, originally created in the image and likeness of God, fell through disobedience, incurring thereby both physical and spiritual death.  All people are born with a sinful nature, are separated from the life of God, and can be saved only through the atoning work of the Lord Jesus Christ. The destiny of the impenitent and unbelieving is existence forever in conscious torment, but that of the believer is everlasting joy and bliss.

Salvation

We believe that salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and that this faith is manifested in works pleasing unto God.

Christian Living

We believe it is the will of God that in union with Christ each believer should be sanctified thoroughly thereby being separated from sin and the world and fully dedicated to God, receiving power for holy living and sacrificial and effective service toward the completion of Christ’s commission.  This is accomplished through being filled with the Holy Spirit which is both a distinct event and progressive experience in the life of the believer.

The Church

We believe the universal church, of which Christ is the Head, consists of all those who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, are redeemed through His blood, regenerated by the Holy Spirit, and commissioned by Christ to go into all the world as a witness, preaching the Gospel to all nations.

We believe the local church, the visible expression of the universal Church, is a body of believers in Christ who are joined together to worship God, to observe the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, to pray, to be edified through the Word of God, to fellowship, and to testify in word and deed to the good news of salvation both locally and globally. The local church enters into relationships with other like-minded churches for accountability, encouragement and mission.

Life After Death

We believe there shall be a bodily resurrection of the just and of the unjust; for the former, a resurrection unto life; for the latter, a resurrection unto judgment.

Second Coming of Christ

We believe the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is imminent and will be personal, visible and premillenial.

Baptism

We believe baptism by water is a symbolic demonstration that a person has trusted in Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord. Baptism, while it does not save, is an act of obedience.
